Most of the publications for foreign students of the Japanese language are from the pens of foreign scholars. Studies and researches in the Japanese language made by foreign scholars may have merits and demerits.
But it would not be too much to say that a publication by a Japanese concerning his own mother-tongue may be of some importance to foreign students.
The author has chosen the National Language Readers of Japan as the basis for his present publication.
These Readers were compiled by a Special Committee of the Department of State for Education and are taught in the primary school throughout the whole of Japan. It goes without saying that the language of these Readers is Standard Japanese.
If the student gains command of what is taught in these Readers, he can understand the language of all classes, can express his own thoughts, and can read ordinary newspapers, magazines and books.
Books for the study of the Japanese language in the past appear not to have given sufficient attention to phonetics, especially to accent and intonations. In the present publication detailed grammatical and phonetic explanations of Japanese words are given.
Since the usage of the "Teniwoha" (particles) is of vital importance, a thorough-going explanation of each particle is given.
After the completion of the hand-book for the Twelfth Reader a Japanese dictionary, with special marks for accent and intonations, also a grammar of the spoken and written Japanese, will be published in English.
I send forth this publication to the public, trusting that it will be of some service to foreign students of the Japanese language which is my own mother-tongue.
