Klappentext:
The energy crisis has overthrown many of the certainties of contemporary life, yet few developments are as surprising as the current revival of architecture in unbaked earth and adobe.
For many, the phrase 'earth architecture' conjures up images of primitive discomfort and poverty, but in fact - as Jean Dethier demonstrates in this persuasive book - the opposite is true.
For almost 10,000 years man has built in unbaked earth, not only simple dwellings but also palaces, temples and fortresses of the utmost grandeur.
Today, in places like Arizona and New Mexico, people are again choosing to build the most modern and luxurious homes out of this material.
These modern users are following the example of a third of the world's population that still lives in houses of earth. Their dwellings are living proof that earth architecture can survive the wear and tear of centuries, that an exciting range of powerful architectural forms can be achieved in it, and that these thermally ideal structures are as comfortable in Morocco as they are in Scandinavia.
In the wake of growing disillusion with the 'International Style', questions are being asked concerning the cost and availability of modern materials in a world starved of energy.
Indeed, the neglect of earth architecture over the last 50 years begins to look like a calculated avoidance of a solution to the housing problem - a solution that would largely have bypassed both the construction industry and the design professions. We are now realizing our errors, and this richly illustrated book presents the full evidence, cogently and unflinchingly, for the first time.

JEAN DETHIER studied architecture and town planning in Brussels, and went to North Africa in 1965 to write on housing traditions there. He worked for the Moroccan Ministry of Town Planning and the United Nations, and later directed a project whose aim was to establish non-colonial building policies for the country.
In 1972, after completing his research at Princeton, he was appointed town-planning advisor to a housing group in Paris, and in 1975 was involved in one of the first 'post-modernist' housing projects in France. He then became architectural advisor to the Centre Georges Pompidou, whose Centre de Creation Industrielle is one of the few of its kind in the world.
He has directed and supported a number of major exhibitions. His book on the rise, fall and rebirth of the railway station - All Stations -was based on one of these.
The present book was prepared in connection with the exhibition 'Des Architectures de Terre' ('Down to Earth'), first mounted at the Centre Georges Pompidou in October 1981 and subsequently worldwide.
