Foreword:
With the assistance of the City of Yokohama and the Educational Board of Yokohama, the Nippon College of Physical Education was able to hold the 1985 International Conference of Sports and Physical Education last year from September 1 through 3.
While NCPE is Japan's largest college of physical education and is proud of nearly 100 years of tradition, it was a herculean task for a single private university to hold an international symposium of this scale.
However, through the support of institutions such as the Ministry of Education, The Nippon Taiiku Gakkai, The Asahi Shirabun, Kanagawa Prefecture, The Board of Education of Kanagawa Prefecture, Asahi National Broadcasting Company, The Conference of Physical Education Colleges, The Kanagawa Press, and the great assistance of others in many diverse fields, the Conference was a complete success.
Under the leadership of International Olympic Committee Chairman Juan Antonio Samaranch who graciously took on the role of honorary president, the Conference welcomed over 180 participants from 11 nations.
With the arrival of an era which calls for "Sports for All", the true role of sports and physical education into the 21st century is being heatedly debated.
We are firmly convinced that this Conference was as timely as it was deeply relevant in so far as it provided a venue for experts from around the world to exchange information and aggressively engage in discussion on the basis of that information vis-a-vis the education of leaders of sports and physical education, sure to play a crucial role in the future development of sports.
Hoping to preserve the results of the conference and to make a contribution, however small, to the study of the sports and physical education of the future — one responsive to the needs of the new era, our college has published this Report.
The report consist of two volumes:
Volume One - Proceedings
For editing reasons, in this volume the papers presented at the conference were, for the most part, reproduced as submitted. Speeches presented at the Opening and Closing Ceremonies were transcribed from tape and presented unedited. For these reasons, there are a number of unsightly problems in both style as well as layout and design; we only hope that they are not too distracting.
Volume Two - Resources
The resource volume consists of curricula for developing instructors in sports and physical education of different countries submitted by Conference participants. We sent requests for curricula to nearly 300 more institutions. Those arriving before the printing deadline have been included in the Curricula section of this volume.
Collections of curricula on the education of instructors of specific fields are quite rare, thus this volume is being eagerly awaited by numerous institutions throughout the world.
Unfortunately, due to restrictions on time and labor, we were unable to create as perfect a report as we had hoped for.
Yet, we hope that it will be able to be of some use in research as well as in the development of instructors of sports and physical education.
Finally, we would like to express our heartfelt appreciation to the many individuals who, after the conclusion of the International Conference, took time out of their busy schedules to share their time with us in the production of this Report.
