It is no exaggeration to say that, without Miró's work, the face of modern art would be very different from what it is. It would be missing, so to speak, an eye, the expressive vision of that eye, which is precisely the vision of Miró. That vision is so unique, and the work that comes out of it is so personal and solitary especially when compared to the seething turmoil of ideas and forms today, that it would be as difficult to find a disciple for Miró as it would be to find a master.
Certainly Miró's work has been plagiarized, but it has never been imitated. His style is far too distinctive. Miró was a Surrealist and his debt to men like André Breton or Paul Eluard cannot be questioned. He is indebted to them in particular for the understanding, support and friendship they gave him.
But with or without them his work would inevitably have followed its course. Miró's own temperament forced him to give free rein to the violent expression of his revolt and anti-conformism.
Nor did he have any choice but to explore the fascinating depths of the dream world that is so typically his and that, with an ever-renewed spirit of youth, he has crystallized so perfectly in one work after the other.
