A new Journal containing information on Buddhist Studies! May it be read in the spirit it is edited and may it spread with the speed and precision it was conceived.. We believe Buddhist Studies to have found a true homestead in Germany since long, but ever after Mara's brown and black-clad bands have flooded our country and almost led it to complete annihilation, we have lacked a Publication giving information on such activities of German scholars proving interesting and useful to all Buddhist readers abroad.
Much has been written since the end of the war, as will be seen from the bibliography published in this first issue of our Yearly, a fact, which may be even more surprising to our readers, as it serves to prove, that slander does not pay, and that on the territory of our German Democratic Republic research work and publications in Buddhist topics always have been encouraged.
But above this traditional values, which we want to preserve, we feel to be children of the same generation, of a new generation witnessing the rebirth of national and cultural activities in the young nations of Southeast Asia and East Asia (precisely on such territory, where Buddhism flourished for thousands of years.
Being ourselves the citizens of a reborn German state and being released of the slavery chains of imperialism, militarism and racial hatred, we are now much better equipped to correspond in sympathy and solidarity with our readers in Buddhist countries.
A Buddhist Centre (Arbeitsgemeinschaft fur Buddhistische Forschungen in der DDR) has been founded in Halle, at the ancient seat of learning supported and guarded by the high standards of our University.
But Halle is only the centre of this activity, the Academies in Berlin and Leipzig, the Universities in Berlin, Greifswald, Jena, Leipzig and Bostock contribute from their rich experiences in our field of studies, as do individual scientific workers all over our German Democratic Republic.
