Gatsby, our selection for the 47th edition of MeadWestvaco's American Classics Series, is a novel about the American dream - or what Fitzgerald felt was left of it in the aftermath of World War I.
"You are all a lost generation," the elder poet and novelist Gertrude Stein had told the young Ernest Hemingway, describing him, his friend Fitzgerald and the rest of an immensely talented generation of young, post-war American writers.
Fitzgerald picked up on this lost generation theme in his first novel, This Side of Paradise. In it, he described this new generation as one dedicated "to the fear of poverty and the worship of success; grown up to find all Gods dead, all wars fought, all faiths in man shaken."
In a later collection of stories, Fitzgerald introduced the term The Jazz Age to describe the irreverent, irrepressible spirit of the 1920s.
In his words, "It was an age of miracles, it was an age of art, it was an age of excess, and it was an age of satire." It was also an age of booming prosperity, forbidden boozing and loosening sexual mores.
And Fitzgerald, his alluring wife Zeida and The Great Gatsby would become emblems of the era's playful, often reckless exuberance. [...]
