Preface to the New and Revised Edition:
British Life and Institutions has been used by students and teachers of English in Germany (and other countries) for many years. It has now been rewritten to present German readers in particular with an introduction to the way of life and the social and political institutions of the United Kingdom as they are in the mid-1970s.
New material has been introduced in all chapters and it is presented so as to emphasize the changes which have occurred in the organisation of British affairs and the way British people regard themselves and the rest of the world.
In some ways this is a very different book from its successful predecessor. But the important things about it remain. It gives, at an intermediate range of language difficulty, a concise and detailed survey of the main features of British life and institutions, and it provides a handy and compact work of reference, well indexed.
While its use will be chiefly as a classroom reader, British Life and Institutions is also well-designed for private study.
Each chapter is self-contained and gives a complete treatment of one aspect of British life, which may be read in isolation: except for the first two introductory sections it is not essential that the chapters should be read in the order in which they appear.
Derek Howard

DEREK HOWARD was educated at Cambridge and London Universities. He has taught English to students in Sweden, Norway and Germany, and has run courses in England about British life and institutions for teachers from overseas. He has been a regular contributor to The Times and the Daily Telegraph and has broadcast for the BBC.
In addition to his books on the English language and on British social institutions for foreign readers, Derek Howard has published several books on social history and on problems of delinquency. He is a magistrate and at present Director of the Newham Voluntary Agencies Council, which is concerned with voluntary social work in the East End of London.
